Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe - Custard Style
This homemade vanilla ice cream recipe is a rich and creamy complement to most any dessert.
I really prefer the French style custard ice cream over the Philadelphia style, especially when it comes to homemade ice cream.
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups heavy cream or whipping cream
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
6 egg yolks
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions:
Heat milk and cream in a pot on the stove (med.low heat). Using a mixer or a whisk, mix together (in a bowl) the sugar and eggs yolks. Stir 1 cup of the hot cream and milk into the bowl of sugar and egg yolks in a steady stream with the mixer or whisk. Add the contents of the bowl to the pot on the stove and continue to stir until it thickens. Put the mixture into a bowl and stir in vanilla. Cover with plastic wrap and let cool a little, then chill in the refrigerator. When it's cold, stir well, and pour into the ice cream maker. Freeze according to the directions for your machine. Usually takes 25 minutes. Serve immediately if you like it soft. Or, if you like to scoop your ice cream, put it into containers and freeze for a couple of hours or until hardened.
Here's another great vanilla ice cream recipe that is very simple to make and does not call for eggs or require any cooking. (This is known as Philadelphia style.)
